Meguro Canvas grew from my own experience of moving to the United States with my family for my husband’s overseas assignment, where I gave birth to and raised our child. At the time, there were no AI tools like those available today, and it was not easy to find the information I needed or stay connected with others. I often struggled with unfamiliar cultural expectations and everyday rules, and there were many days when I felt isolated and uncertain.

Over the past 30 years, I have worked in language education and in corporate roles involving international operations. Along the way, I saw international employees in Japan who had never been given the opportunity to understand the unspoken rules of Japanese workplaces or how work is expected to be approached. As a result, some were misunderstood or unable to demonstrate their full potential.

​

I also understand from personal experience that relocating abroad brings significant changes not only for the employee, but for the entire family. That experience is why I am deeply committed to supporting family members who relocate alongside an international professional, as they navigate a new life and build a sense of belonging and meaningful connections of their own.

​

Our goal is not Japanese proficiency for its own sake. We see Japanese as an important tool for connecting with others and building a fulfilling life in Japan. In my lessons, I use English when helpful to explain grammar and expressions clearly, enabling learners to build practical Japanese skills efficiently, even when their time is limited.

With these ideas in mind, I founded Meguro Canvas to bring practical Japanese, cultural understanding, Life Navigation support, and human connection together in one place.

Meguro Canvas Meguro Honcho currently offers cultural experiences centered on Japanese home cooking for visitors from around the world. Looking ahead, we plan to grow Meguro Canvas Meguro Honcho into a welcoming gathering place where members can share meals and build deeper connections—a warm community where food and hospitality naturally bring people together across cultures.

I spent 43 years at Honda, including more than 25 years in talent development both in Japan and abroad. During my assignment at Honda of America in Ohio, I focused on training local staff and bridging cultural differences through technical education and the “Honda Philosophy.”

​

This experience taught me that people perform at their best when they feel comfortable asking questions and understand not only what is expected of them, but why.

​

Japanese workplaces often rely on unspoken expectations, indirect communication, and customs that can be difficult to understand from the outside. At Meguro Canvas, I draw on this experience to help international professionals navigate Japanese workplace culture and communicate with greater confidence in their day-to-day work.

​

In an age when so much information is available digitally, we believe there is great value in meeting face to face and taking the time to understand each person’s individual circumstances. Rather than relying solely on general explanations, we work through the real situations each person is facing—addressing questions such as, “Why might my Japanese colleagues see it this way?” or “How should I interpret and respond to this situation at work?”

At Honda, I learned to value the Three Reality Principle—genba (the actual place), genbutsu (the actual thing), and genjitsu (the actual situation). It means seeing what is really happening firsthand and making decisions grounded in reality. I bring this same practical approach to Meguro Canvas. By carefully examining each situation, I aim to reduce misunderstandings and ease each person’s concerns, one step at a time.

Nala and Malo came into our lives through adoption. They are irreplaceable members of our family and the heart and soul of Meguro Canvas. Their lives have taught us that a safe place, compassion, and love can nurture meaningful change and growth.

This belief lies at the heart of Meguro Canvas. People—and all living beings—can begin to flourish when they have a welcoming place where they feel safe enough to put down roots and simply be themselves.

As our Chief Happiness Officers, Nala, our “Head of Comfort,” and Malo, our “Director of Playfulness,” bring warmth, calm, and joy to our community.

​

They remind us that connections can grow beyond words. To us, they are gentle symbols of the “Second Home” we hope to create for everyone navigating life across cultures.

​

While they can still be a little shy around new people, they warm up at their own pace. We hope you’ll take your time getting to know them!
